Janet Bernard, 80, of Hot Springs, S.D., passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at Monument Health Hospital.

Born in Presho, S.D., Janet moved to Hot Springs with her family in 1947. She worked in local cafés and as a bartender and waitress before marrying William Bernard in 1976. Together, they raised a large blended family, ran several businesses, and traveled extensively — always making time for their kids and grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; children, Jerry and Shawn Beck and Leilani Homelvig; her parents, Adolph and Mayme Atkinson; and ten siblings.

Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Cancer Care Institute, Monument Health Hospital, Rapid City Medical Center, and Hot Springs Hometown Healthcare for their unwavering support and compassionate care throughout Janet’s journey. A special thank you to the nurses, who she lovingly referred to as her “angels.” Your kindness, expertise, and comfort brought her peace, and we are forever grateful.

A Celebration of Life will be held on her birthday, October 15, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chautauqua Park in Hot Springs.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs, S.D.
